Grande, Tall
So yeah, the name of this blog ‘venti’ - is indeed at least partly a coffee reference, I am one of those irritating people who thinks chain-store coffee is delicious, and who likes to think he knows ‘good coffee’. When I was 15 I hated people like that - people who think having a cultured weekend is going to Starbucks and reading the entertainment pull-out from the Guardian with a big frothy mocha on the synthetic cherry-wood table in front of them.
But I guess that’s what I’ve become. Although, I’ve yet to see a copy of the guardian in Japan, and I am at least aware of how preposterous the notion of coffee shop culture is. That has to be a start, right?
Being in Japan, you can add to the list of coffee-shop patrons all those people who have seen a few poorly translated American rom-coms and who think that the best way to meet their ideal man is to sit inside a dimly lit cafĂ© wearing massive sunglasses and drinking low fat cappuccinos. I’m amazed at how so many Japanese people aspire to live a western lifestyle. And not just 17 year old guys (like those in England who want to move to Japan and live the life of their favourite anime character) but real people, man and women with jobs, cars and apartments probably replete with Ikea furniture and faux-limited edition copies of modern design classics.
